Nevertheless, no one should never wonder if iced tea will be available for breakfast in Natchez. Key West might lay claim to being the “southernmost city” in the United States, but I have always believed Natchez to be the “most Southern” city. One day, when I grow up, I hope to be a coffee drinker. It was during that sod-laying summer and I, along with my co-workers, ate at a cheap meat-and-three for lunch every day.

We powered through the afternoon and cooked our Saturday dinner with Alex Harrell from Sylvain, KellyMcCann from Galatoires, and Jeremy Conner of Village Cafe. It’s been a few years since I have been involved with the Natchez Food and Wine Festival, and I’m glad to see that this weekend has grown into a regionally viable event. Chefs from all over Mississippi and Louisiana are participating in the weekend’s festivities and meals. After the event a bunch of us went to the “Chef’s After-party” where the drinks are free and food is really just there to soak up the hooch.

I was a soda drinker at the time, but soda was $1 extra with lunch. Eventually I developed a taste for iced tea and have been drinking it ever since. My two dining companions ordered coffee with breakfast. As always, I ordered iced tea — though I was a little hesitant coming on the heels of a California trip the previous week. Iced tea is not readily available in California, and if it is, it’s usually flavored with some foreign flower, fruit or fragrance. I started to hesitate when ordering iced tea with the server, then quickly realized that I was in Natchez, Mississippi, and of course they will have iced tea available at breakfast.
